If you asked the average person walking down the street in almost any other city in the country, which US city has the longest continuously operating ballet company in the United States, few would guess Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta, however, would be the correct answer. The Atlanta Ballet company was formed in 1929 and has been going strong ever since. Atlanta is known for its vibrant night life, its culinary tradition, and its traditional southern charm, but it is also a center for culture and the arts as well.
To be precise, the group known as the Atlanta Ballet today, was once called the Dorothy Alexander Dance Concert Group after its founder and first director, but the name was changed in 1946 when it became the Atlanta Civic Ballet, and again in 1967 when it achieved professional status and became the Atlanta Ballet, Incorporated. Dorothy Alexander created and led the group from 1929 to 1963, an incredible 34 years at the helm. That tradition of longevity held for the next director, Robert Barnett, who ran the company from 1963 until 1994. The third and current company leader is John McFall.
It was under the leadership of John McFall that the company opened the Centre for Dance Education which teaches both children and adults not only ballet, but a variety of dance styles including such modern styles as jazz and hip-hop. The Atlanta Ballet actively recruits the best of the Centre’s student for its productions. The Centre for Dance Education is Georgia’s only accredited dance school.
Even few Atlantans know that the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, at the time called the Atlanta Youth Symphony, was partially funded by a generous donation of the profits earned by the Atlanta Ballet for its 1946 performance season. Dorothy Alexander’s lifelong dedication to ballet and the arts resulted in her receiving the National Endowment for the Arts Award in 1973. Later, in 1981, she received the dance community’s highest honor, the Capezio Award.
Today, the Atlanta Ballet is hoping to move into a new headquarters building in 2010, and is currently raising capital toward that end. The group has already raised $10 million of its $14.6 million goal. The company’s new headquarters building will be named the Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre after a long-time supporter.
The Atlanta Ballet and the Centre for Dance Education remain committed to enhancing the culture of Atlanta with numerous outreach programs that strive to instill a love of dance to the city’s school children.
